About Small Business @ CIT

Small Business@CIT is committed to providing an environment that supports the creation, growth and development of small business in the ACT. The emphasis is on providing training solutions to what the small business operators needs, combined with an emphasis on developing partnerships with other small business peak bodies, to serve the small business community.

Small Business specific skills will be offered for those who want short-term problem solving and hands-on tasks. To pick up a specific skill you can attend workshops located at the Reid Library and Learning Centre or, if sufficient numbers, on your site. Where possible, examples from the business owner’s own business will be utilised; for those who are intending to start a business, case studies and electronic simulated small business activities will be available. We know that the success of any learning is based on the capacity to meet a business need.

Short courses are available at either the Reid Flexible Learning Centre or the Tuggeranong Flexible Learning Centre. To set up your office or learn how to operate your equipment efficiently come along to the Small Business Virtual Office located at CIT’s Southside Campus, Ainsworth Street, Phillip. A growing, mature business, on the other hand, is more likely to have a long-term vision, be involved in strategic thinking and require structured formal learning to obtain, for example, an Advanced Diploma of Management or Marketing.

The key areas of learning offered in Small Business@CIT are marketing, managing staff, business planning, managing finances, office and computing.

'I found most of the subjects have given me skills and knowledge useful for a career in IT. The level of knowledge of the teachers – and their ability to teach that knowledge – was excellent. The teachers would always be available, either in person or through email, to answer questions or provide extra support.'
